2290 Filing
Owners of commercial vehicles with a gross weight over 54,000 lbs. must file IRS Form 2290 and pay the Heavy Vehicle Use Tax (HVUT). The tax year runs from July 1 through June 30, and payment is generally due by August 31 each year. If a vehicle is first placed into service after August 31, the tax must be paid by the last day of the month following the month the vehicle was put on the road. An Employer Identification Number (EIN) is required to file Form 2290. Filing and paying on time helps avoid interest and penalties.
